Storage Space
Storage Space
Getting
more useable storage space is
often a
reason people find their current home inadequate and want to move to a
new
house.
When
you look through a home you are considering - don't just look at the
bedroom
closets and think about your clothing
and
shoes.
Where
will you put the sheets, towels,
cooking
utensils, flower vases, holiday decorations, craft and project items,
games,
electronics, books, etc - all those things that you are
collecting that
make you uniquely you?
Tools currently take up about the
space of a 1
car garage now in our family - car tools, carpentry tools, gardening
tools,
etc. These are also usually heavy and
unusually shaped making them some of the hardest objects to move!
Many
years in the military with many moves
makes me regret how much I left behind, gave away & threw out. Although, giving to a variety of charities
all across the country has been rewarding both personally and
financially for
tax purposes. After experiencing
Hurricane Hugo in Charleston, SC in 1989, I gave a large amount of
clothing and
other items to people who had everything they owned swept away in the
flood
waters. My next move to California was
the easiest because I had fewer boxes to pack and unpack.
Identify the items you must keep and move
particularly if you are downsizing.
A
good way to do a storage comparison
of
homes is to count the number of closets you currently use, and compare
the size
and number to the new home you are considering.
Also, do this with the Kitchen cabinets and pantry area.
Our old Kitchen seemed smaller than our new
one, but the number and size of the cabinets was the same with some in
the new
home smaller or more difficult to reach.
This resulted in not being able to store as many items as before.
I have ended up with some good crystal under
a bathroom sink which is not used often.
In
a bathroom, a pedestal sink
may look
great and be very modern, but it means that there isn't any storage
space
underneath it for towels, cleaning products or even toilet paper!
Make
certain there is at least a linen closet close to this bathroom to
store those
items.
The
value of a home with lots of storage space cannot be underestimated!
