Room Design & Layout
Too much furniture or too little? Individual Room Design can make the whole house more comfortable to live in.
When you move into a new place you often do not have enough furniture to fill some of the rooms. Planning and budgeting before you move will help to keep you from over spending or having more than you need. Also, don't think that you have to fill every room with furniture as soon as you move in.
When you think about your Room Design take the ceiling height into consideration also. High ceilings can make a small space feel bigger and more open.
Today's overstuffed furniture and large size pieces can fill a room quickly and overpower the proportions of the room.
I wanted the Complete Family Room set - large sofa, a loveseat, a large, wide matching chair with a huge footstool or ottoman (it was bigger than some coffee tables!) After the furniture was delivered I could not get the pieces arranged so that you could walk thru the room easily to the opposite hallway. Although it was comfortable furniture, and everyone in the family had a place to sit and watch television, the room always felt crowded and too full.
Take measurements of your room with you to a store and consult with the sales people or an interior decorator.
To make a long story short - the next house with a family room twice as big held all of this furniture & it looked great!
Another way to determine how your current furniture or new furniture will fit & how the living spaces will feel is to compare the sizes of the rooms in your current space to your new one.
For example - we have a large master bedroom right now, but we do not really need one this big in our next house. When I look at floor plans I compare the current dimensions with the plans dimensions. I know that I want a room that is almost as wide, but could be 5 to 10 feet shorter.
Master Suites with sitting room space are very popular in floor plans right now, but we just don't need this area or use it because the house already has a Family Room and a separate Office.

Remember - the more house, the more it costs to keep up, heat & cool the square footage and maintain.
