Garage Space !

Garage space can and usually is used for a lot more than parking cars!

Anyone who wants a place for their tools, hobby items or works on their cars appreciates a little extra space and a way to do the dirty part of a job outside.

If you or your family like to work on their cars in the evening after work - take a look at the lighting in the space. Are there over head florescent lights or just one dim fixture? Is there a way to add more lighting thru additional outlets or wiring in the ceiling or walls? If you cannot see to do the work under the hood of the car it will decrease your utilization of the space.

If you will be spending a lot of time in the garage in a hot climate consider air conditioning part of the space or getting a small space air conditioner. If you are going to design and build a home you may want to have a separate area that is insulated and air conditioned.

One builder told us that he modified a house with 4 bedrooms so that the one closest to the garage had a door that opened to the outside, a linoleum floor, and the buyer was going to park his motorcycle in the room.

I took a class on how to create real stain glass windows, but this hobby creates a lot of small glass shards and mess. A hobby room or section of the garage that can accomodate this type of work is a much better solution than trying to keep an interior room clean, or glass shards out of the carpet!

Garage Styles

Three example photos of different styles - 2 Car Front Loading Standard, a Three Car Side Entry, and a 2 Car Courtyard Entry

Standard 2 Car Note - a house with a Side Entry must be built on a much wider lot - usually 90 to 100 Ft wide.

Courtyard and Side Entry Driveways are also easily redesigned to include a Drive Thru or Semi Circular Driveway.

This design works well if you want to reduce the amount of grass that you have to cut and maintain in your front yard, can add eye appeal and interest to the front of a plain house, or increase the garden and planting area space.

Design Tip

A three car was just too small for two cars to drive and two classic mustangs. We also wanted to have a lot of driveway space for parking for family, friends and parties - so we wanted a house with what is called a Court Yard entry. We found a house floor plan that we liked with a three car that faced forward toward the street. Then we asked the builder to extend it out toward the street until the side of the house was large enough to have a two car entry in the court yard style to the right of the front door entry way. This gave us a HUGE space that can hold more than 5 cars! Or 4 cars and a boat - and room to work!
